Past Trip Reviews \ YG Mission to Chicago 2011

163 members of YG spent their February vacation in Chicago, Illinois as part of the largest mission trip in YG history. Working alongside members of the Bethesda Christian Center and Casa Central, the youth group split into ten teams to tackle eleven two or three-bedroom apartments in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago. The task was to renovate and rejuvenate the units that serve as transitional housing for families struggling with homelessness. The teams started the work week with the demolition of decades old kitchens, bathrooms and furnishings and then began the task of putting new life into each unit. Through priming, painting, installing new floors, cabinetry and household accessories the teams left the units looking, feeling and functioning like completely different spaces.

On the last day of work, teams were able to greet the families they had spent time with all week and who would move back into the units. “Getting to know Julia and her children was one of the biggest privileges of this trip. Just knowing that I was working on their apartment made me work harder and with more love,” reflects twelfth grader Manasi Bhagia. “I felt like I was part of her family and they will always be part of mine.”
