Church School \ Special Programs

In addition to our weekly Sunday programming, throughout the year you will find many events centered on service, spiritual enrichment or Christian fellowship. All of these events are designed for families to share together and deepen the relationships among our church congregation. Each event is publicized in the church bulletin, newsletter, flyers on campus and mailed invitation.

These events include:

Kick-Off Sunday

The first Sunday of a new program year is “kicked off” with a special theme for the year. A picnic and games follow the 9:30am worship service.

Blessing of the Kindergartners

This year marks an important spiritual milestone in a child’s formalized Christian education. This special occasion is celebrated in September or October at the 9:30am service of worship with a commemorative gift and blessing.

Blessing of the Animals

In the tradition of St. Francis, families are invited to bring their animals and meet on our church steps as we bless all of God’s creatures.

Turkey Day Basket Project

One of the most beloved service projects of our church is the Turkey Day Basket Project wherein Church School classes provide Thanksgiving meals to local families in need. Weekly offerings collected from September to mid-November provide the funding needed for this program. On the Sunday before Thanksgiving families join us at the church to assemble and decorate over 100 “Turkey Day Baskets” which are then delivered by our youth groups.

Advent Fair and Wreath Making

Families are invited to join in the holiday spirit by bringing the tradition of lighting an advent wreath into their own homes. On the first Sunday in December, we meet to make advent wreathes, sing carols and join in a host of other Christmas festivities.

Annual Nativity Pageant

A beloved tradition of this church, each year the 3rd grade presents the Christmas Story at both services of worship. Rehearsals are the 1st and 2nd Saturdays in December.

Christmas Eve Worship

A service for children of all ages! Celebrate the joyous event of Christ’s birth as a family at 4pm on Christmas Eve. The service includes a beautiful procession of light, dramatic presentation, carols and special anthems by the Joyful Noise and Spirit Singers children’s choirs.

A winter service event such as the “Sock Hop for the Open Door Shelter”.

To benefit a local shelter, we offer a service project for families during one of the winter months. In the past we have collected socks for Open Door, collected and sorted clothes for Neighbor to Neighbor and participate in activities both focused on Christian fellowship and awareness for others in need.

A Lenten Event such as “The Last Supper Reenactment”

During this time of reflection as we journey with Jesus to the cross, we offer a dramatic presentation so that our children may understand the events that led up to Christ’s Last Supper, crucifixion and resurrection.

3rd Grade Bible Presentation

Another “Spiritual Milestone” in the life our children, 3rd graders gain proficiency in using the Bible. Children focus on memorizing the books of the Old and New Testaments, learn about who wrote the Bible, and other interesting and important mechanics of using the Bible. Each child is presented with their own special Bible during worship to commemorate this event.

Fourth Grade Introductory Communion and Workshop

Each year the current 4th grade Church School class joins us in worship to receive communion for the first time. In partnership with our church deacons, this “Spiritual Milestone” provides our 4th graders with a complete look at the ritual of communion. In the workshop they not only learn what communion is and why we take it, but also ideas about what it means to us as Christians and how to prepare mentally and spiritually each time they receive communion.

Children’s Sunday Worship, Picnic and Games

This 10:00am service of worship is led entirely by the children of our church. Modeled after our traditional service of worship, the children participate in and lead all the parts of worship, while celebrating the milestone of completing another year in the church school program. A picnic and games follow this service.
