Celebrating 10 Years of Maasai Partnership

CEbuildingLEBRATE 10 Years of Maasai Partnership!

In June, 24 congregants will celebrate our special bond with the Maasai by traveling to Kenya to build a dormitory and library for The Beloved Daughters of the Maasai Rescue Center. To help buy books to fill their library shelves, stop by the Missions and Outreach table in Smith Hall during May and June, or contact Marianna Kilbride for more information at marianna@godsacre.org.

The Project

Over the years, Francis Sakuda has worked with us to identify both the greatest need in his community and the poorest of the poor to be the recipients of aid. In that vein and in celebration of our 10th anniversary in partnership, we wish to lift up the most marginalized of all, young women and girls. Last to be educated and first to be shoved out when families are too poor to manage, girls as young as 9 years old are married off when families cannot afford to feed them. SIMOO, our sister organization in Kenya, has established a rescue center for girls. Here girls rescued from genital mutilation and forced early marriage, live, with their parents’ consent, in a safe and caring environment while getting an education. The aptly named Beloved Sisters of the Maasai Rescue Center has currently a dormitory only and is in the process of adding a kitchen, dining hall and food storage.

The center’s most important need now is for a library/study, which will prevent the girls having to venture out in the evening to do their studies. In addition there is a need for a second dormitory enabling more girls to be recued. As with all our Maasai projects this will move beyond present benefits, wonderful as they are. Recent studies show myriad benefits in educating girls for the entire community, from raising GDP to increasing child immunization rates to diminishing corruption.

We hope you share in our joy at the anticipation of this project to celebrate our 10 years of loving partnership with the Maasai. During this spring’s OG mission trip to Kenya, 24 congregants will spend four days constructing the library/study and dormitory, as well as viewing the past projects we have partnered on. Parishioners here in New Canaan can help celebrate this milestone by filling the library with books. Sign-up during May and June coffee hours or with Marianna Kilbride at marianna@godsacre.org.
